Technical Procedures

From Ashes to Cremation Diamonds: LONITÉ's Laboratory and Process

Memorial Diamonds Technology

A diamond is in fact crystallised carbon. Carbon (C) accounts for 18% of any animals’ bodies, which makes turning ashes into memorial diamonds possible.

Natural diamonds grow in an environment of extreme pressure and high temperature deep in the earth's mantle over millions of years.

At LONITÉ, we recreate these high-pressure and high-temperatures natural environments in our laboratory over a period of 9 to 12 months (1 ct).

To turn ashes or hair into diamonds,  the following material amounts are required.

The "Naturally Amber" colour in our memorial diamonds comes from the presence of Nitrogen.

The presence of Boron in the ashes will turn the diamond into a blue colour.

If our lab removes both nitrogen and boron from the ashes, memorial diamonds will become colourless.

Definition

What is a Cremation or Memorial Diamond?

The human body contains 18% carbon, whilst diamonds are pure carbon.

The only difference between natural diamonds and cremation diamonds from ashes is their origin - cremation diamonds are created from cremated ashes, whereas natural diamonds are minerals that form underground over billions of years.

FAQs

How Long Does the Process to Turn Ashes into Diamonds Take?

Including the time involved for shipment and purification, the total time of turning human ashes into diamonds takes between 12 months, depending on the colour, the cut and the cremation diamond size required.

How much ashes or hair do I need to provide to order a cremation diamond?

You should provide 150g of ashes or 5g of hair which are the normal amounts required to grow a cremation diamond. However, if you do not have enough cremation ashes or hair, family members can provide a supplement amount of hair that will be added to the ashes or hair already provided.

How can I prove that the cremation diamond is from hair/ashes of my loved one?

Our proof comes in the form of a technical examination and the certification methodology of the cremation diamond's original source. Scientific proof and certification can be provided based on the carbon atoms and chemical density of the cremation diamond, which must match the carbon, hair or ashes that the diamond originated from. The carbon is tracked and documented continuously throughout the ashes to diamonds process, by a LONITÉ team of microphysics and high-pressure science researchers.

What is the process used to create a LONITÉ cremation diamond?

To turn ashes or hair into diamonds, we first need to extract the carbon contained in the ashes of hair provided. The ashes are placed in a specialised crucible which is heated to over 5000F to make sure every element except carbon oxidizes, and then temperature is raised further so that the carbon can become graphite. The graphite with a metal catalyst and a diamond seed crystal are then placed into the core which goes into a specialised diamond press capable of creating extreme tension which then starts working, thus bringing the pressure to about 800,000 pounds/square inches. During the last stretch when the press is working, the temperature in the room stays about 2500F until the cremation diamond is formed.

How does carat size affect the diamond growing time?

The size of the memorial diamond is a key factor in determining the time required for the ashes-to-diamonds process. Larger diamonds demand more time, consequently leading to extended production and higher costs. Additionally, the chosen diamond colour further contributes to the production timeline due to varying technical requirements.

Can you make multiple diamonds from the ashes of one person?

If you want to create several memorial diamonds from one individual, it is possible, and you will simply have to provide us with more ashes or hair than the basic amount required of 150g of ashes or 5g of hair.

Why is the cost of turning cremated ashes into diamonds so high?

The price of a cremation diamond depends on the required SIZE and COLOUR. Larger diamonds necessitate extended growth cycles, leading to higher costs. The machinery employed is substantial, operating under extreme temperature and pressure conditions. The process demands utmost precision. For instance, growing a one-carat colourless diamond can take hundreds of hours.

Consequently, the technology used to transform ashes into diamonds is intricate and comes with substantial costs.

What are cremation diamonds?

Cremation diamonds are real diamonds made from human cremation ashes. Firstly, the carbon of the cremation ashes is purified. Then, it is pressed into a cremation diamond with high pressure and high temperature (HPHT) machine.

Are cremation diamonds real?

Yes, cremation diamonds are real diamonds. They are chemically, physically, and optically the same as diamonds that have been mined from underground. Cremation diamonds are all certified to be genuine diamonds.

Where to turn ashes into diamonds?

The ashes into diamonds service is available worldwide, in countries such as the UK, United States, Australia and Canada. All cremated ashes will be sent to Switzerland, where they are turned into diamonds.

How to turn ashes into diamonds in the UK?

To turn ashes into diamonds in UK, first you need to contact LONITÉ to get the Ashes Submission Kit. Secondly, you will need to send the ashes to the LONITÉ UK office in London, and finally, you will get a tracking ID after receipt of the 50% deposit. For the U.S., Canada and Australia, the process is similar.

How much are cremation diamonds?

At LONITÉ, the price of a cremation diamond starts from $1400 or £1400. The cost depends on the size of diamond ordered. The larger the size, the higher the cost.

Commencing at $1400 or £1400, our cremation diamond prices are size-dependent. As the diamond's size increases, so does the associated cost, offering you a range of choices tailored to your preferences.

How can ashes be turned into diamonds?

3 steps are needed to turn cremated ashes into diamonds: Step 1 - Extract the carbon from the cremation ashes or hair. Step 2 - Purify the cremation ashes to 99.99% purity in the LONITÉ laboratory. Step 3 - Place the carbon inside a high pressure and high temperature (HPHT) machine to crystalize.

How do you make diamonds from ashes?

By re-creating natural underground environments inisde LONITÉ laboratory, diamonds from ashes are made in High-Pressure High-Temperature (HPHT) machines. The carbon source of the diamonds are extracted and purified from the ashes or hair of the deceased.
